"Elly Wanna Befree"  by Artist Glennis McClellan

Starting in Summer 2003, 12 foot high painted fiberglass wild animals will appear on street corners, green spaces, community centers, downtown plazas—everywhere across Rochester! Posted at each location will be background on the species represented, a biography of the artist, and a bit of background on each Sponsor.

This is the second time PETA has commissioned Ms. McClellan to paint an elephant to help raise awareness of the plight of Circus Elephants. The first was for a Public Art Project in Washington D.C. called "Party Animals". This second design is even bigger and bolder than the last, and is sure to be a huge success!

This design was created with acrylic paint and trompe l’oeil techniques. The shackle is real, as many of these animals live their lives in small cages, chained to the floor. The message on the Elephants back "Step Right Up, see Shackles, Bullhooks and Whips at the Circus" is indicative of the training techniques often used to force Elephants to perform. In contrast to the glitter associated with circuses, performing animals' lives are pretty miserable and hopefully this design will educate the public and raise awareness. For more information on the circus animal abuse go to www.circuses.com.
