Original design concept

Washington needs more monuments - so here is my contribution.  This design is a marble statue being carved by artists, who are rendered "Rockwell" style.   There are 8 characters all together, including a snoozing boy and playful dog.

This design for Smartycus was based on the ceiling and wall murals located in the Library of Congress located in Washington D.C.

The torch, which represents knowledge - a prevalent theme of the Library, inspired the name Torch symbols,  adorn his flanks and chest.

Small Putti hold a scroll on each Flank announcing the title -  one scrolls reads "Smartycus Pantsicus" the other "Asinus Intellexti"

the Peace Rose

This statue is dedicated in loving memory of my Grandparents: Mr. & Mrs. Rev. J.E. McClellan.  Their love of roses and peace inspired my design.   There is a message to them hidden on the statue.

Roses, symbolic of world peace, decorate the statue: Peace Roses adorn the back, Golden Wing Roses climb the front and American Roses  frame the Whitehouse.

A subtle patriotic design,  views of the  Whitehouse appear on both sides of the Elephant.  Since President Bush put roses back in the Whitehouse Rose Garden it only seems more appropriate that it appear in the design (Former president Clinton was allergic!)

Note: the initial title and concept was "the Yellow Rose of Texas  in the Whitehouse" - but we decided to go with a more non-partisan name!

Project Information

The Party Animals Public Art Project  is the largest public art project in the history of Washington, DC.  The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities chose local and national artists to create designs for 100 donkeys and 100 elephants. These polyurethane icons will stand 4.5 feet tall by 5 feet long. The Party Animals theme icons will be installed at various sites throughout the Washington, DC area from May 1 and will continue to be on display until the fall of 2002. The exhibition will culminate with a Raucous Caucus Auction and all proceeds will be channeled back to the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities' grant programs. The Party Animals campaign is committed to making public art accessible; increasing tourism; and giving all participants—artists, sponsors and viewers—an opportunity to have FUN!
